Aston Villa Winger Samuel Iling-Junior Commends Unai Emery Despite Bologna Loan

Aston Villa winger Samuel Iling-Junior has spoken highly of head coach Unai Emery, despite being considered lower down the pecking order by the Spaniard.

During the summer transfer window, the 20-year-old was part of a complex deal involving Douglas Luiz’s transfer to Juventus. Iling-Junior, along with Enzo Barrenechea, moved in the opposite direction, with neither player seen as an immediate first-team choice.

While Barrenechea was loaned to Valencia, Iling-Junior joined Champions League qualifiers Bologna on loan. The aim for all involved is for Iling-Junior to make a strong impression and return to Villa Park to compete for a place in the senior squad for the 2025-26 season.

“I Value Honesty”

Having joined Bologna late in the transfer window, Iling-Junior has yet to start a match, featuring only as a substitute three times.

Despite this, he scored on his debut against Como and was given opportunities against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League and Monza in Serie A.

At his official unveiling this week, Iling-Junior addressed the move to Bologna, acknowledging that it was the best decision for his career at this stage.

As reported by Tuttosport, he stated: “I spoke with the manager and realized there wasn’t much opportunity for me. Since I value honesty, I decided to seek a team where I could have more chances.

“Bologna has an exciting project, as I had noticed last year. After moving to Aston Villa, the offer from Bologna came along—a city I like with a manager I respect—and I chose to come here.

“I was already impressed by the environment and the fans last year; I found it very appealing.”

How Is Barrenechea Performing at Valencia?

After spending last season on loan at Frosinone, Barrenechea is taking a significant step up with his move to Valencia.

The 23-year-old has made a strong start in La Liga, with his two appearances in the starting XI helping Valencia secure four points.

He contributed to a 2-0 victory over Girona and also played in the goalless draw against Osasuna.
