Man United Forward Rejects Fenerbahce Move’ Due To Mourinho’s Stance
Fenerbahce have reportedly targeted Mason Greenwood, but the Manchester United striker has reservations about playing under Jose Mourinho. The 22-year-old recently finished a loan spell at Getafe in La Liga, and now the Red Devils face a new decision regarding his future at Old Trafford.
Greenwood has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault. However, all charges were dropped last February. United initially considered reintegrating him into Erik ten Hag’s squad but decided against it due to concerns about backlash.
Now, United are reportedly open to offers for Greenwood this summer, with several clubs across Europe expressing interest.
According to The Sun, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are interested in signing 22-year-old Mason Greenwood for the upcoming season. However, the report claims that Greenwood is reluctant about the prospect of working with Jose Mourinho, despite having impressed the former Manchester United manager during training sessions in his academy days.
Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford when Greenwood began gaining attention as a talent within the senior team. The Portuguese coach even included him in the squad for a pre-season tour to the USA in 2018. However, Greenwood never featured at senior level under Mourinho, as the manager departed Manchester before the player broke into the first-team setup.
Greenwood made his debut for the Red Devils under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League round of 16 tie.
Beyond Mourinho, another potential obstacle to the transfer could be Greenwood’s reluctance to move to the Super Lig at the age of 22, especially considering the interest he has received from clubs in the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A.
European giants in pursuit of Mason Greenwood
Juventus are reportedly leading the race to sign Mason Greenwood this summer, with recent reports suggesting the player has verbally agreed to the move.
Getafe, where Greenwood was on loan, were keen to make the deal permanent but are unable to meet both the asking price and his wage demands. The 22-year-old made 33 appearances for Getafe in the 2023-24 La Liga season, contributing to 14 goals, scoring eight and assisting six.
Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli have also shown interest in the attacker since his loan stint ended.
Greenwood currently earns £75,000-a-week at Old Trafford, with his contract set to expire in 2025, although Manchester United have the option to extend it by another year.
As an academy graduate, United are unlikely to let him leave on a free transfer, as a sale would be pure profit for the club.
During his time at Old Trafford, Greenwood featured in 129 games across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and providing 12 assists.
