Man United And Man City Join Liverpool And Barcelona In Race For £51m Attacker
Manchester United and Manchester City have reportedly entered the race to sign RB Leipzig attacker Dani Olmo during the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old midfielder scored nine goals and provided five assists for the Bundesliga club this season and has also attracted interest from Barcelona and Liverpool.
Olmo, who began his career at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, made a name for himself with Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Leipzig on a four-year deal.
According to Mundo Deportivo, both Manchester clubs are the latest to express interest in the talented midfielder, setting the stage for a competitive battle to secure his services for next season.
European heavyweights to vie for Olmo’s signature
Alongside Barcelona and Liverpool, Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring Dani Olmo following a disappointing season in which they lost the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.
Olmo signed a new contract with RB Leipzig last summer, extending his stay until 2027 with a £51m release clause. However, this clause is only valid until the end of the European Championships, giving interested clubs until mid-July to make their move.
Manchester City has the financial capability to meet Olmo’s wage demands, making them a highly attractive option for the Spanish midfielder.
Moreover, Olmo, who aspires to join a major European club with the potential to win significant domestic and international titles, may find it hard to pass up the chance to play under Pep Guardiola.
Olmo could be an ideal fit for Manchester City
With potential departures like Bernardo Silva and uncertainty surrounding Jack Grealish’s future, the Premier League champions need to bolster their attacking midfield options.
Olmo’s versatility in various positions and his ability to contribute goals and creativity would significantly enhance City’s squad.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have heavily relied on Bruno Fernandes for goals and creativity from central areas. Olmo could help share this burden and potentially serve as a long-term successor to Christian Eriksen.
The Red Devils are expected to undergo a major overhaul this summer, with Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial likely to leave Old Trafford soon, and Casemiro’s future still uncertain.
Additionally, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his associates are expected to offload loanees Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, and Donny van de Beek in the offseason, potentially raising the funds needed to secure a player of Olmo’s caliber.
However, a major obstacle for United is their inability to offer the 26-year-old Champions League football, which all the other suitors can provide.
