Harry Maguire To Discuss Man United Future Irrespective Of Erik Ten Hag’s Status
Harry Maguire is reportedly set to begin discussions with Manchester United about his future at the club as he enters the final year of his contract. The 31-year-old, who joined for a record £85m from Leicester City in 2019, has faced challenges at Old Trafford in recent seasons, including being stripped of the captaincy in 2023.
Last summer, the England international was linked with a move to West Ham United, but the transfer did not materialize as he chose to stay and compete for his place under Erik ten Hag.
With the club expected to conduct a post-season review of both players and the manager, significant uncertainty remains about the future of the Red Devils’ centre-back.
Maguire determined to stay at Old Trafford next season and beyond
According to The Sun, Maguire is committed to remaining at Old Trafford for the upcoming season, regardless of whether Erik ten Hag continues as manager or is replaced.
With only one year left on his contract, plus an option to extend for an additional 12 months, the defender aims to extend his stay after making 31 appearances this season.
The report indicates that Maguire will discuss his future with the club’s hierarchy in the coming months, likely after Euro 2024 in Germany.
The 31-year-old is expected to play a key role for England at Euro 2024 this summer, having been included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad.
Initially expected to spend much of the season on the sidelines, Maguire secured regular playing time due to United’s persistent injury issues. He scored four goals this term, including a decisive winner against FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League in October.
Maguire’s fight to reclaim a spot in Man United’s first team
Following the arrivals of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, Maguire had to compete for his place in the squad, demonstrating determination and drive to regain his form.
In an interview with ManUtd.com, the former Red Devils captain acknowledged, “In football, you don’t go through a 15-year career without spending some time on the bench. Last season was the first time in my career I had to face that. I told myself to remain patient and do everything I could off the field to support the team because I want this club to be successful, whether I’m playing or not. Every day at training, I aimed to drive the standards and maintain the intensity needed to secure three points.”
Maguire missed the FA Cup final due to a muscular injury but remains hopeful about his recovery in time for England’s Euro 2024 campaign this summer. He skipped a family vacation to accelerate his rehabilitation, with increasing optimism that he will be fit for the Three Lions’ opener against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
