Liverpool Among Clubs Interested In £60m-Rated Midfielder
Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Porto midfielder Alan Varela.
The Reds are preparing for life under new manager Arne Slot, who will officially take charge on June 1.
Despite overhauling their midfield during the 2023 summer transfer window, Liverpool are still looking to bring in a new midfielder. Last year, they added Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, and Dominik Szoboszlai to their ranks.
However, the club remains keen on securing a top defensive midfielder ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
Liverpool Showing Interest in Varela
According to Deportes 24, Liverpool are set to join the race for Porto’s Alan Varela as they look for reinforcements.
The Reds face competition from Premier League champions Manchester City and German giants Bayern Munich. All three clubs have reportedly consulted Porto about a potential move for the 22-year-old midfielder.
Varela, who signed a five-year deal upon his arrival from Boca Juniors last summer, is under contract until the summer of 2028. However, he is believed to have a €70m (£60m) release clause in his contract, which could facilitate a move this summer.
Who Is Porto’s Argentine Midfielder?
Alan Varela rose through the youth ranks at Boca Juniors, eventually making 111 competitive appearances for the senior team.
Following his impressive performances at Boca Juniors, Varela moved to Portuguese giants Porto last summer for an initial fee of €8m (£6.8m).
The Argentine midfielder quickly established himself in Sergio Conceicao’s squad, featuring in 44 matches during his first season with Porto.
Having made a couple of appearances for the Argentina Under-23 team, Varela is expected to represent his country at this summer’s Olympics in Paris.
