Aston Villa Reach Full Agreement To Re-Sign 30-Year-Old Midfielder

Aston Villa have reportedly reached a full agreement with Ross Barkley for his potential transfer from Luton Town.

The 30-year-old joined Luton on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, aiming to revive his career after a challenging few seasons.

In the 2022-23 campaign, Barkley made 28 appearances across all competitions for Nice, but his future did not lie in French football.

Given another chance at Premier League success by Luton, the former England international delivered, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 32 league appearances.

Despite his efforts, Luton could not avoid an immediate return to the Championship, finishing 18th in the top-flight standings, six points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th.

Villa ‘Reach Agreement to Sign Luton’s Barkley’

According to Football Insider, Ross Barkley has taken a significant step towards securing Premier League football for consecutive seasons.

The report states that the 30-year-old midfielder and Aston Villa have reached a “full agreement” for his transfer to the club during the summer window.

Barkley was identified as a potential signing earlier this month, and Villans head coach Unai Emery has approved the deal.

While Saudi-backed Newcastle United also showed strong interest in the former Everton player, Villa appear to have won the race for Barkley’s signature. He will be looking to add to the 24 competitive appearances he made for the club during his loan spell in the 2020-21 season.

The Pull of Champions League

With multiple clubs vying for Barkley’s signature this off-season, the midfielder had to decide on his long-term future.

After an impressive season in the Premier League, it was unlikely that the 33-cap international would stay at Kenilworth Road to fight for Luton in the Championship.

The allure of Champions League football is believed to have sealed the deal for Barkley, who looks set to return to Villa Park on a permanent basis.

Following their fourth-place finish in the Premier League with 68 points from 38 matches, Emery’s squad has secured a spot in the first edition of the revamped Champions League.
