Phil Foden Of Manchester City Has Been Awarded The Premier League Player Of The Season.
Phil Foden of Manchester City has been named the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season. The 23-year-old academy graduate is in his eighth year with the senior team and has had arguably his most outstanding season yet under manager Pep Guardiola.
Foden has been a crucial player for a Man City side on the brink of becoming the first team in English top-flight history to win four consecutive titles. The England international has recorded 25 goals – the highest of his City career so far – and 11 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions, including 17 goals and eight assists in 34 Premier League matches.
Foden surpassed the 50-goal mark in the Premier League with a brace in the Citizens’ 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last month and added another goal in their 4-0 win against Fulham last weekend.
Foden tops an eight-player shortlist to win the Premier League award. He has outperformed competitors including teammate Erling Haaland, Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, and Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak to claim the Premier League Player of the Season award for the first time in his career.
City’s No.47 garnered the highest number of public votes, which were combined with the votes of a panel of football experts.
Foden is the fifth Manchester City player to win the Premier League Player of the Season award, following last season’s winner Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20 and 2021-22), and Ruben Dias (2020-21).
The versatile attacker received this accolade just two weeks after being named the 2024 Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year.
Foden was also in contention for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, but this honor went to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, a former Manchester City player.
Foden “extremely proud” after “special” season
“Winning this award is an achievement I am extremely proud of,” Foden told Manchester City’s official website.
“The Premier League is recognized as the greatest league in the world, and it’s an honor to be nominated alongside so many other great players who have had special seasons for their clubs.
“Overall, I’m very happy with my performance this season and pleased that I could contribute with goals and assists throughout the campaign.
“I’d like to thank all the City staff, coaches, and especially my teammates because, without them, this wouldn’t be possible.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me, as this award means a lot.”
Foden aims to finish the season on a high note by helping Manchester City win their final Premier League game at home against West Ham United on Sunday to clinch the title, before focusing on the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester United on May 25.
