Liverpool Goalkeeper Confirms Summer Departure Plans

One of Liverpool’s first-team goalkeepers has confirmed his intention to leave Anfield during the summer transfer window. Veteran Spaniard Adrian, who has been serving as Jurgen Klopp’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher, has not made a single appearance for the club this season.

The 37-year-old has been on the bench in the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup due to Alisson’s absences through injury but hasn’t played for Liverpool since the 2022 Community Shield win over Manchester City.

Adrian’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season, and it has been widely expected that the former West Ham United and Real Betis goalkeeper will move on when his terms expire.

In a recent interview with Mucho Deporte, Adrian confirmed his desire to return to his homeland for the 2024-25 season, although he admitted that he has yet to discuss his future with Liverpool.

“I would like to return to La Liga after 11 seasons in the Premier League. It would be a fitting end to a cycle. I am still ready to compete and feel very good despite being 37,” Adrian said.

“Goalkeepers, if they take good care of themselves and avoid serious injuries, can maintain a high level. Daily training keeps you sharp and ready to compete.

“It needs to be a nice, interesting project. I haven’t had a discussion with Liverpool yet. I don’t rule out the possibility of a conversation, but it’s true that we are also looking at opportunities in La Liga.”

Adrian’s expected departure from Liverpool will conclude his five-year tenure at Anfield, where he has kept seven clean sheets in 26 matches and won seven major honors, including the 2019-20 Premier League title.

The 37-year-old first made his mark in England with West Ham United, who signed him in 2013 after his rise through the Real Betis youth system.

Could Adrian be one of two Liverpool goalkeepers to depart this summer?

In addition to Adrian, whose summer departure was long anticipated, Liverpool are also likely to lose their current number two, Kelleher, when the summer transfer window opens.

The Republic of Ireland international has been Alisson’s understudy for several years, although he enjoyed an extended spell in the first team earlier this season while the Brazilian was injured.

However, Kelleher promptly returned to the bench once Alisson recovered, and Liverpool reportedly expect him to seek a move elsewhere for more regular playing time.

A transfer to Celtic has been suggested for the Irishman as a replacement for current Bhoys’ number one Joe Hart, who announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Thus, Adrian, Kelleher, and Klopp could all bid farewell to Anfield on Sunday when Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final Premier League match of the season.
