Manchester United Would Face A £10 Million Cost If They Were To Dismiss Erik Ten Hag This Season.
Manchester United would reportedly be required to pay £10 million to Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff should they opt to dismiss the Dutchman from his managerial role before the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign.
Pressure on Ten Hag heightened following a 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace last week, yet he remains in charge as the team prepares to face title contenders Arsenal in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Following this fixture, the Red Devils are scheduled to play against Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion in their final two league matches of the season before contesting the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25th.
According to Football Insider, terminating Ten Hag’s contract before the season’s end would result in compensation fees amounting to £10 million for the 20-time English champions, covering the Dutchman and his support staff.
The report suggests that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently acquired a minority stake in Old Trafford, is currently evaluating the managerial situation ahead of the upcoming summer.
Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain. Despite having a contract until June 2025, with the option of an additional year, it remains unclear if he will continue as manager for the start of the 2024-25 season.
While there is potential for Ten Hag to lead the Red Devils to FA Cup success this season, which would secure a spot in the group stage of the 2024-25 Europa League, the team’s current standing in the Premier League adds to the uncertainty. Currently, Manchester United is in eighth place in the league table, having suffered 13 defeats in what has been a disappointing campaign.
Additionally, the team’s struggles in this season’s Champions League, where they finished bottom of their group, resulting in their elimination from European competition last year, further clouds Ten Hag’s future.
During his press conference on Friday, Ten Hag expressed no concerns about reports suggesting his potential exit, asserting his confidence in remaining at the helm of the Red Devils.
Despite significant injury setbacks faced by Manchester United this season, Ten Hag emphasized that the club’s owners are fully aware of the challenges he has confronted. He explained to reporters, “The [owners] have common sense. You see when we have 32 different back lines, we’ve used 13 partnerships in centre half, when they see we don’t have a left back, they know that will have a negative impact on results.”
Highlighting the significance of the upcoming FA Cup final, Ten Hag remarked that it could serve as a pinnacle moment for the season. He attributed the team’s underperformance to the abundance of injuries in key positions, stressing that no team can excel under such circumstances.
While Thomas Tuchel, set to depart Bayern Munich this summer, is favored to replace Ten Hag should a change occur, other potential successors include England head coach Gareth Southgate and former Chelsea manager Graham Potter.
