Manchester United Is Reportedly Gearing Up To Reignite Their Interest In A Barcelona Player.
Manchester United is reportedly preparing to launch another bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Red Devils pursued De Jong during the summer of 2022, with their then-newly appointed head coach Erik ten Hag identifying the Dutch international as his top target.
Although Barcelona indicated a willingness to negotiate with Manchester United, De Jong repeatedly expressed his disinterest in a transfer. Despite facing some injury setbacks, De Jong has remained a pivotal player for Xavi’s side this season, featuring in 30 matches across all competitions, and still has two years remaining on his current contract.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has presented a contract renewal offer to the former Ajax prodigy, but it remains unsigned as De Jong is reportedly holding out for a better financial package.
Manchester United is reportedly still optimistic about securing the signature of De Jong. According to the report, Barcelona considers De Jong as a vital player, but given the club’s financial predicament, they would entertain serious offers for the midfielder this summer.
The Catalan giants are reportedly interested in acquiring either Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad or Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich, potentially paving the way for De Jong’s departure. Ten Hag is purportedly resolute in his pursuit of bringing De Jong to Manchester United, seeing him as the ideal addition to rejuvenate a struggling midfield this season.
De Jong’s representatives anticipate increased interest from the 20-time English champions this summer, especially with the potential departures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen from Old Trafford. The midfielder, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019, is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and is expected to be out for the remainder of the season.
The midfield situation at Manchester United is undergoing changes. Casemiro appears poised to leave the club this summer, with Al-Nassr reportedly showing increased interest in the 32-year-old, who has recently been deployed in the center of defense.
Eriksen is another player likely to depart, as the Danish international’s contract is expiring in the summer of 2025, and he is seeking regular playing time at this stage of his career.
Scott McTominay is expected to remain despite being heavily linked with an exit last summer, while Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes continue to be integral players for the Red Devils.
Mason Mount is set to stay at the club despite facing challenges this season, but Sofyan Amrabat will return to parent club Fiorentina, and Donny van de Beek is poised to leave permanently.
As a result, at least one central midfielder is expected to arrive this summer. Additionally, two center-backs and a center-forward are also anticipated to join Old Trafford in the upcoming transfer window.
