Barcelona Priced Out Of Move For Manchester United Forward
Barcelona appears to have been priced out of a potential summer transfer for Mason Greenwood, as Manchester United is reportedly demanding €60m (£51.9m) for his services in the upcoming transfer window.
The 22-year-old has made a significant impact while on loan at Getafe during the 2023-24 season, tallying 10 goals and six assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.
Despite recent comments from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a new minority shareholder at Manchester United, suggesting a potential route for Greenwood to return to the first team next season, it seems unlikely that he has a future at Old Trafford.
While Getafe president Angel Torres has expressed interest in retaining Greenwood for another season, it’s unlikely that another loan deal will be approved, with Manchester United now looking to offload him permanently.
Greenwood is reportedly poised to depart Manchester United permanently. According to Marca, Barcelona is interested in acquiring Greenwood, but their financial constraints prevent them from meeting United’s €60m (£51.9m) asking price. Consequently, Barcelona seems to be withdrawing from the competition, while Atletico Madrid has yet to make a formal offer despite showing interest.
The report suggests that Greenwood is eager to join a Champions League club, with Juventus and AC Milan also reportedly expressing interest. Alternatively, there’s speculation that Greenwood might consider a move to the Saudi Pro League, as officials from the division are actively pursuing him away from European football.
Barcelona finds themselves unable to afford a transfer for Greenwood. The talented player has represented Manchester United in 129 matches, contributing 35 goals and 12 assists. His most recent appearance was against West Ham United in the Premier League back in January 2022.
Two years ago, Greenwood faced serious allegations of rape, assault, sexual assault, and threats to kill, following accusations from a woman. However, in February 2023, the case against him was dropped, allowing him to resume his career this season. Despite Manchester United’s initial intention to reintegrate him into the first team last year, they were compelled to reverse their decision due to public backlash.
This season, Greenwood has showcased his prowess with eight goals and six assists in 29 La Liga outings, along with two goals in three Copa del Rey appearances.
