Xavi to continue as Barcelona manager beyond this season
Barcelona president Joan Laporta declared on Thursday afternoon that Xavi would extend his tenure as head coach of the Catalan giants beyond the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.
In January, following a 5-3 home defeat to Villarreal, Xavi had expressed his intention to step down as manager of the reigning La Liga champions this summer.
However, the team’s performance improved significantly in the second half of the season, remaining unbeaten in 13 consecutive games across all competitions before suffering back-to-back defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Key figures within the club have been engaged in efforts to persuade Xavi to remain at Barcelona, and it has now been officially confirmed that he will continue at Camp Nou beyond the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign.
“I am pleased to announce that Xavi Hernandez will remain as the coach of the Barca first team,” Laporta stated during a press conference on Thursday.

Xavi emphasizes Barcelona’s proximity to major accomplishments
Xavi affirmed, “My initial decision was appropriate given the circumstances as we needed a change in direction. However, the situation has evolved. I now feel sufficiently empowered to continue shaping this project.
“While we may not have met our trophy objectives for this season, there’s optimism for the future, and I believe we’re on the brink of significant achievements.
“The players have shown their belief in me and have conveyed their solidarity and backing, which influenced my change of heart. The supporters’ encouragement also played a role in my reassessment. I’m grateful for their unwavering support and affection.
“The players are already aware. We’ve had one of the finest training sessions of the season. The president and I have provided explanations, which echo what I’m expressing here. I’ve sensed everyone’s trust, and I feel resolute. That’s the narrative.”
With Barcelona currently occupying the second spot in La Liga, they aim to rebound from their recent defeats against PSG and Real Madrid as they face Valencia in their upcoming league fixture on Monday night.
