Chelsea, Newcastle United Considering Move For Out Of Favour Arsenal Man
Chelsea and Newcastle United are reportedly considering the possibility of making a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Despite being Arsenal’s main goalkeeper for the previous two seasons, Ramsdale’s role has changed during the 2023-24 season.
Ramsdale has only made 11 appearances in all competitions, with two of his six Premier League appearances coming when David Raya was ineligible to play against his parent club Brentford. Since the beginning of the year, the 25-year-old has only started twice, and it seems unlikely that he will feature again for the remainder of the campaign.
While Mikel Arteta currently has a reliable backup in Raya, whose permanent transfer will cost £27m in the summer, Ramsdale may not be satisfied with his long-term prospects at the club.
Chelsea and Newcastle are reportedly showing interest in Ramsdale. Currently, Ramsdale has two years left on his contract, with an option to extend it by an additional 12 months. However, if his circumstances remain unchanged, Ramsdale is unlikely to consider renewing his contract, which would be Arsenal’s best strategy to protect his value.
According to Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel, both Chelsea and Newcastle are considering making a move for Ramsdale in the upcoming transfer window. Additionally, several European clubs are said to be admirers of Ramsdale, suggesting that he will have plenty of options if he decides to leave Arsenal.
Could Chelsea or Newcastle realistically be destinations for Ramsdale?
Both clubs have faced goalkeeper issues throughout the season, particularly Newcastle due to a long-term injury to Nick Pope. Martin Dubravka has filled in for much of the last five months, but at 35 years old, the Slovakian international is contemplating his future at St James’ Park.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have seen Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez vie for the number-one spot this season, with Petrovic only getting his chance due to an injury to Sanchez. However, neither goalkeeper has sufficiently impressed to secure the role long-term, leading to the possibility of a new goalkeeper arriving before the 2024-25 season.
While Chelsea also have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Gabriel Slonina in their squad, it’s anticipated that Arrizabalaga will be sold in the summer, and Slonina may go out on loan again.
