A Manager Linked With Liverpool Reportedly Harbors Reservations About Stepping Into Jurgen Klopp’s Shoes.
One highly regarded manager linked with the Liverpool job reportedly has reservations about taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Klopp’s announcement in January of his departure at the end of the season after nine successful years at Liverpool has left a significant void to fill.
During his tenure, Klopp led the team to their first Premier League title and their sixth Champions League victory. As Klopp’s final season draws to a close, Liverpool remains in contention for both the Premier League and Europa League titles, having already secured the EFL Cup in February by defeating Chelsea.
With just over two months remaining in the season, Fenway Sports Group is intensifying its search for a new first-team manager, particularly after persuading former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards to return as the club’s new CEO of Football.
Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly reluctant to fill Jurgen Klopp’s shoes at Liverpool, despite being a potential candidate. With Michael Edwards returning to Fenway Sports Group and Richard Hughes joining as the new sporting director from Bournemouth, finding Klopp’s successor has become a top priority for the owners.
However, after Xabi Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, another contender has ruled himself out. Julian Nagelsmann, the current head coach of the German national team and former Bayern Munich manager, might reject the opportunity to manage Liverpool, even though he could be without a job next season.
Although his contract with the German national team expires after Euro 2024, Nagelsmann seems hesitant to take on the immense pressure of following in the footsteps of Klopp, one of the most successful managers in the club’s history.
If Julian Nagelsmann indeed departs from Germany soon, he is likely to have numerous job opportunities awaiting him. Barcelona will soon be in need of a new head coach following Xavi’s departure, and there’s a possibility of a sensational return to Bayern Munich, especially with Thomas Tuchel set to leave.
With Nagelsmann out of contention for the Liverpool job, the focus returns to the two frontrunners, Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon and Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton & Hove Albion. Both coaches have release clauses just above £10 million, but Liverpool seems to have stepped back from pursuing De Zerbi, particularly after Brighton’s recent loss to Klopp’s team.
Therefore, Amorim emerges as the top candidate at present. While he hasn’t directly dismissed the possibility of joining Liverpool, Barcelona is also showing interest in him.
