Real Madrid Is Considering The Prospect Of Acquiring A Defender From Chelsea.
Real Madrid is reportedly still interested in signing Chelsea defender Reece James. At the start of the season, the full-back was appointed captain of the Blues by new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, a decision seen as a natural progression for the academy graduate.
However, the 24-year-old has faced another challenging season, with injuries limiting him to just 451 minutes of action across all competitions. After undergoing hamstring surgery in December, it remains uncertain whether the English international will be fit to play at any point during the remainder of the season.
Recent reports suggest that James could be made available for transfer by co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital as they explore options to generate the necessary funds to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.
Is it feasible for Reece James to be sold?
The mentioned report proposed that Boehly and Clearlake might seek to offload James for a sum around £60m.
Presently, finding a club willing to meet that valuation for a player with documented injury concerns, and who would need to demonstrate the success of his hamstring surgery, seems improbable.
Additionally, James has yet to fully embrace the responsibilities of being captain at his childhood club, and his contract extends until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season.
However, according to Fichajes, Real Madrid is persistently monitoring the situation as they contemplate whether to escalate their longstanding interest in the player.
Real Madrid’s challenges at right-back
Despite Real Madrid’s position at the summit of La Liga and their advancement to the Champions League quarter-finals, Carlo Ancelotti faces dilemmas regarding the right-back position.
Dani Carvajal, a long-serving incumbent, is now 32 years old, as is his deputy Lucas Vazquez, and neither are seen as long-term solutions for that role.
Nacho provides another option, but he too is well into his thirties, making the right-back position a potential area of concern for Real unless they introduce a younger player in the near future.
Currently, the club’s focus appears to be on finalizing any potential move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, with Alphonso Davies emerging as a target for the left-back position.
Given Reece James’s injury history, the report suggests that Real Madrid may be willing to offer €40m (£34.21m) for the Englishman, a proposal that would prompt considerable consideration from Chelsea.
