Tottenham Hotspur Have Reportedly Renewed Their Interest In A Former Academy Prospect
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in bringing back former academy talent Marcus Edwards from Sporting Lisbon. Under Ange Postecoglou’s management, Spurs have undergone a transformation in their attacking play, earning praise for their attractive style of football.
Throughout the season, players like James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, and Richarlison have all made significant contributions. However, despite their successes, Tottenham has been without European football this season, a situation expected to change in the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.
In light of this, Postecoglou aims to bolster the squad’s depth, although there remains a commitment to integrating academy prospects into the first-team setup.
There were previously high expectations for Edwards to transition into a regular first-team player at Tottenham, but he only made a single senior appearance before departing the club following several loan spells elsewhere.
According to A Bola, Spurs are now considering the possibility of bringing Edwards back to London next season.
At 25 years old, Edwards has evolved into one of Portugal’s standout talents, tallying 31 goals and 29 assists in 143 Primeira Liga appearances.
During his time at Sporting, the former England Under-20 international has recorded 21 goals and 25 assists in 104 matches across all competitions. Currently, he is a key figure for Sporting, who currently lead the domestic league standings.
The report indicates that any club interested in signing Edwards would need to offer a fee exceeding £17 million, considering he is under contract with Sporting until 2026.
Crystal Palace is also reportedly eyeing Edwards, but the allure of returning to Tottenham may be too strong for the attacker to resist if an offer materializes.
For Spurs, the potential acquisition of Edwards holds added value. Presently, the team lacks homegrown options in their senior squad, with Oliver Skipp being the sole player meeting such criteria. While other fringe players like backup goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman and young forward Dane Scarlett are available, securing a player of Edwards’ caliber, who can contend for a starting position, would greatly benefit Postecoglou’s squad.
Edwards has a longstanding history with Spurs, having been with the club for 13 years before departing in 2019. He initially joined Spurs at the age of eight.
