Lisandro Martinez Of Manchester United Is Set To Return To England On Saturday.
Manchester United center-back Lisandro Martinez is set to fly back to England on Saturday in a bid to be available for his side’s upcoming game against Brentford on March 30. The 26-year-old hasn’t played for the Red Devils since sustaining a knee injury against West Ham United at the beginning of February.
Martinez has only made 10 appearances for the club this season due to missing a significant portion of action earlier in the campaign after undergoing his second foot operation in 2023.
Despite being unexpectedly named in the Argentina squad for their March friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica, Manchester United clarified that Martinez would not be considered for either match. He had merely traveled with the squad to the United States to intensify his training program.
A statement on Manchester United’s official website earlier this month stated, “It has been decided that Lisandro will benefit from training with his international colleagues as he regains fitness, rather than staying at Carrington, where there will be few players training next week.”
At the close of the previous week, a report surfaced suggesting that Manchester United harbored hopes of fielding Martinez for their upcoming fixture against Brentford on March 30.
As per the Daily Mail, Martinez is currently en route back to England, curtailing his time with the Argentina squad prematurely to resume his rehabilitation at Manchester United’s Carrington training complex.
Reportedly, the center-back anticipates his readiness for the Brentford match and believes that a full week of training at the club’s headquarters will bolster his chances of participating in the encounter with the Bees.
While Argentina secured a 3-0 victory over El Salvador last Friday, Martinez observed from the sidelines, with his Manchester United teammate Alejandro Garnacho entering the fray as a substitute at halftime.
The defender has been absent from Manchester United’s lineup for the past five Premier League matches, and he also missed out on fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Nevertheless, Martinez is poised to make a timely return for Erik ten Hag’s side next weekend, aiming to leave behind a frustrating 12-month period marked by injury setbacks.
Manchester United remain in contention for silverware this season, with Championship side Coventry City awaiting them in the semi-finals of the FA Cup next month.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are in a battle to secure a Champions League spot in the Premier League standings, currently occupying sixth place, trailing fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by six points and fourth-placed Aston Villa by nine points, with Villa having played one more game.
