England Manager Gareth Southgate Has Ruled Out Engaging In Talks With Manchester United Before Euro 2024
England manager Gareth Southgate has effectively removed himself from contention for the Manchester United managerial role in the summer. Despite a mixed stint with Middlesbrough early in his managerial career, Southgate has bolstered his reputation with England’s successes.
During his tenure with the Three Lions, Southgate led the nation to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final, though the World Cup quarter-final in 2022 was considered a disappointment. Nonetheless, England convincingly qualified for Euro 2024, placed in a group with Italy, and are considered one of the favorites to win the tournament in Germany.
However, recent developments at Manchester United have seen the 53-year-old rumored to be on the shortlist as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether the new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will choose to retain the services of the Dutchman. Ten Hag’s future may hinge on securing Champions League qualification or winning the FA Cup.
Ratcliffe is also interested in bringing in Dan Ashworth as a sporting director. Ashworth, who shares a close relationship with Southgate, is currently on gardening leave from Newcastle United.
During a press conference ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Brazil, Southgate was asked about his potential move to Manchester United. However, the Englishman reiterated his focus on the European Championship and stated that he would not consider any other job opportunities until after Euro 2024 at the earliest.
“I’m definitely not considering speaking to anyone else before then. Throughout my eight years in this role, I’ve always maintained that stance. When I’m committed to a job, I wouldn’t entertain discussions with other parties.”
Southgate expressed his belief that such speculation is disrespectful to Ten Hag, stating: “Manchester United currently have a manager. It’s always wholly disrespectful when there’s speculation surrounding a manager who is already in a position.”
“As president of the LMA (League Managers Association), I don’t condone such actions,” he added.
While Southgate has a contract in place as England manager until the end of the year, potential decisions regarding his future may be expedited depending on England’s performance in the upcoming tournament in Germany.
