Chelsea are reportedly gearing up to present Cole Palmer with a new contract at Stamford Bridge, potentially doubling his weekly wage from £75,000 to £150,000, owing to his exceptional performance this season. The 21-year-old made a surprising move from Manchester City on a permanent basis last summer, joining Chelsea on a seven-year deal with an optional additional year.
Palmer has showcased remarkable form for the Blues this season, tallying 13 goals and 11 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. According to the Daily Star, Chelsea is eager to acknowledge his contributions since his arrival at Stamford Bridge and is considering doubling his weekly earnings.
The negotiations for the new contract could be finalized before Palmer potentially joins the England squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany, as per the report.
Palmer made two appearances for Manchester City early in the season before speculation about a potential loan move to West Ham United began to circulate.
However, he ultimately departed City permanently after making 41 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and providing two assists.
Palmer has been in fine form in the Premier League this season, netting 11 goals and providing eight assists. As a result, he has earned a call-up to the England squad for their March friendlies.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke highly of the attacker while speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester City.
“The way he quickly adapted to a new club like Chelsea, integrated with the coaching staff, and handled the pressure of playing for a prestigious club like Chelsea, I believe that sets him apart,” Pochettino informed reporters.
“The crucial aspect is how he copes with the pressure because we have exceptional players, but sometimes they find it challenging and require time to adjust.
“It’s remarkable how he adapted; he feels like he’s been here for 20 years, plays with ease, and doesn’t seem burdened by the pressure to perform at the level we expect, given his quality.”
During his tenure at Manchester City, Palmer secured four trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup last season.
Despite their struggles in the Premier League this season, with an 11th position in the table, Chelsea still have an opportunity to clinch silverware in the FA Cup this season.
