Sevilla Are Monitoring Chelsea Striker And Burnley Loanee David Datro Fofana.
Sevilla are reportedly keen on securing the services of Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana, who is currently on loan at struggling Premier League side Burnley. The 21-year-old made the move from Stamford Bridge to Turf Moor during the January transfer window, aiming to assist Burnley in their bid to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Fofana’s transfer to Lancashire followed a challenging loan spell at Bundesliga strugglers Union Berlin in the first half of the 2023-24 season.
Despite his difficulties, the Ivorian managed to make four appearances in the Champions League for Chelsea, scoring in a 1-1 draw against Serie A champions Napoli on November 8.
Estadio Deportivo reports that Sevilla are closely monitoring Fofana’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window.
The report suggests that Quique Sanchez Flores’s team expressed interest in acquiring the attacker’s services during the January transfer window. However, a Premier League regulation prevented the move.
English Premier League clubs, including Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, are restricted in the number of players they can loan to foreign clubs.
Vincent Kompany’s team moved swiftly to capitalize on this rule and secured Fofana’s signing for the remainder of the current season, ahead of competition from clubs like Sevilla.
There is reportedly no option for Burnley to purchase the 21-year-old from Chelsea in their loan agreement, indicating that his future beyond this season is likely away from Turf Moor.
Given Kompany’s side’s current position, sitting 19th in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of safety with 10 games remaining, it is anticipated that Fofana will not remain at the club beyond the end of the campaign.
Facing another potential midtable finish in La Liga, Sevilla reportedly prioritize the acquisition of a new striker for the 2024-25 season, especially with talisman Youssef En-Nesyri linked with a departure from Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Fofana remains under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2029 but has struggled to secure regular playing time since his arrival from Norwegian club Molde in December 2022.
Despite Burnley’s winless streak since the Ivorian’s arrival in January, Fofana has been productive in front of goal, scoring three times in seven Premier League appearances.
His latest goal came at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as Burnley ended a four-game losing streak to secure a point against David Moyes’s West Ham United in a 2-2 draw.
