Nathan Ake played a crucial role in the set-piece strategy, obstructing Mac Allister to prevent the Argentine from clearing De Bruyne’s cross before it reached Stones. The officials deemed Ake’s actions legal.

Liverpool had a promising opportunity to equalize in the 31st minute, with Dominik Szoboszlai narrowly heading over the bar from Harvey Elliott’s delivery. Eight minutes later, Erling Haaland shot straight at Kelleher after an eagerly awaited one-on-one with Virgil van Dijk.

Despite being caught off guard, Manchester City, too, showed signs of complacency. Diaz found himself with ample space to unleash a shot from inside the penalty area after City lost possession in midfield. However, the Colombian’s effort missed the target in the 42nd minute.

 

Klopp opted not to make any halftime adjustments, and his decision to maintain the status quo paid off just two minutes into the second half. Ederson fouled Nunez inside the box after Ake’s backpass left him stranded.

In conceding the penalty, Ederson also sustained an injury, which prompted his substitution for Stefan Ortega. Despite Ederson’s efforts to save it, Mac Allister expertly placed the penalty into the top corner, leveling the score for Liverpool.

As Liverpool gained momentum, Ederson’s injury forced him off, and Kelleher showcased his goalkeeping skills by denying Foden’s one-on-one opportunity at his near post in the 58th minute.

Liverpool dominated the following 10 minutes, with Salah and Robertson’s introductions bolstering their attack. Despite creating several chances, they failed to test Ortega in City’s goal.

Salah’s pinpoint through ball found Diaz’s run in the 63rd minute, but the Colombian’s attempt went wide as he angled his shot too much. Moments later, Diaz hesitated in front of goal, allowing Walker to clear the danger.

Guardiola made a conservative substitution, replacing a frustrated De Bruyne with Kovacic. City nearly capitalized on a fortunate opportunity in the 73rd minute when Kelleher’s punch hit Foden, but the ball rebounded off the crossbar, with Foden unintentionally using his arm.

Liverpool remained the more likely side to score a late winner, with Jarell Quansah trying his luck in the 80th minute. Ortega couldn’t hold onto his shot, but he managed to gather it on the rebound.

Despite Liverpool’s missed opportunities, City came close to snatching victory in the 89th minute when Jeremy Doku’s shot hit the inside of the post before bouncing into Kelleher’s hands.

Both teams had eight minutes of added time to find a winner. In the third minute of stoppage time, Cody Gakpo hit the bar from close range, and although Elliott tucked in the rebound, Salah was flagged offside.

There was a tense moment for City in the final seconds when Doku appeared to foul Mac Allister in the penalty area, but the Belgian managed to make enough contact with the ball to avoid conceding a late penalty. Klopp and Guardiola shared a warm embrace on the sidelines after the final whistle.

Liverpool’s draw moved them level on points with Arsenal, but the Gunners remain ahead on goal difference. City stay third, trailing both teams by one point.

Liverpool’s focus now turns to completing their Europa League last-16 tie with Sparta Prague on Thursday, while City prepare to face Newcastle United in the FA Cup quarter-finals in six days’ time.
