Manchester United Have Emerged As The Leading Contenders To Secure The Signing Of Victor Osimhen

Manchester United is reportedly among the leading contenders vying to secure the signature of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen during the upcoming summer transfer window. Osimhen’s availability for €110m (£94m) if his release clause is triggered positions him as one of the most coveted forwards in Europe, particularly with his recent surge in form.

Having played a crucial role in propelling Napoli to their first Serie A title in over three decades last season, Osimhen has garnered continuous attention regarding a potential departure from Serie A.

His achievement of scoring 26 league goals earned Osimhen the title of Serie A Forward of the Season, while his attacking counterpart Khvicha Kvaratskhelia claimed the league’s MVP award.

Although Osimhen has only managed to score 13 goals across all competitions thus far, recent performances indicate that, under new managerial guidance, he could significantly bolster that tally before the end of May.

Following his crucial equalizer in Napoli’s Champions League last 16 first-leg clash against Barcelona, Osimhen also found the net against Cagliari before notching a hat trick away to Sassuolo.

While the tenures of Rudi Garcia and Walter Mazzarri proved disastrous for the champions and saw Osimhen struggle amidst injury concerns, the appointment of Francesco Calzona has rejuvenated Napoli’s fortunes, leading to a return to winning ways.

Impressive performances have garnered significant attention, with reports from The Independent suggesting that Manchester United are among the frontrunners to secure the 25-year-old’s services in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Paris Saint-Germain is also rumored to be interested, particularly with Kylian Mbappe’s impending departure for Real Madrid.

In previous transfer windows, Chelsea and Arsenal were heavily linked with the player. However, the situations at Manchester United and PSG have intensified their pursuit of a new number nine.

The impending takeover of the footballing operations at Old Trafford by Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to prompt a revamp of Manchester United’s playing squad, with a focus on acquiring younger talent.

Chelsea had expressed a keen interest in bolstering their attacking options, especially following Christopher Nkunku’s lengthy injury absence and the underwhelming performances from players like Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal appeared poised to seek a new forward following a turbulent spell to conclude 2023. However, those plans may be reconsidered following the Gunners’ recent remarkable run of form, which has seen them break records and re-enter the title race.

Osimhen is set to return to action for Napoli when they host Torino at the Maradona Stadium in Serie A on Friday.
