Manchester City forward Erling Haaland squandered a golden opportunity to equalize for his team just before halftime in today’s Manchester derby against Manchester United. Despite being in a prime position with the goal gaping in front of him, Haaland somehow managed to send the ball over the crossbar from close range.
The chance was created by Phil Foden’s header across the face of the goal, which bypassed Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and left Haaland with what seemed like a simple tap-in to level the score. However, to the disbelief of everyone, including Haaland himself, he lifted his volley over the bar when it appeared easier to score.
This miss was particularly surprising considering Haaland’s remarkable scoring record, having scored 79 goals in 83 games for Manchester City prior to the derby and netting five times in his most recent match against Luton Town.
Haaland’s visible frustration was shared by his teammates and manager Pep Guardiola, who reacted with despair to the missed opportunity. The incident capped off a frustrating first half for Manchester City, who dominated possession and territory but struggled to find a breakthrough against their opponents.
At halftime, Manchester United held a 1-0 lead thanks to Marcus Rashford’s stunning early goal.
