Tottenham Hotspur Are Reportedly Leading The Race To Sign Hull City’s Jaden Philogene

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the race to secure the signature of Hull City attacker Jaden Philogene this upcoming summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old joined the Championship side on a permanent basis from Aston Villa last year, following loan spells at Stoke City and Cardiff City in the second tier.

While Philogene struggled to establish himself at Aston Villa, making just six senior appearances for the club, he has been making waves in the Championship with the Tigers. In 20 appearances, he has been directly involved in 14 goals, scoring eight and providing six assists.

Operating adeptly on both the left and right wings for Liam Rosenior’s team, Philogene’s performances have been instrumental in Hull City’s current playoff position in the Championship.

Additionally, the young winger’s impressive displays have earned him three caps for England’s Under-21s. His debut for the Young Lions saw him netting two goals and providing an assist in a convincing 9-1 victory over Serbia in October.

Hull currently have Philogene contracted until 2026, with the possibility of extending for an additional 12 months. However, their chances of retaining his services seem slim if they fail to secure promotion to the Premier League for the 2024-25 season.

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Tottenham, who are vying for a spot in the Champions League, have been closely monitoring the former Aston Villa prospect in recent months and are now leading the race to bring him back to the top flight.

The report indicates that Spurs have been consistently assessing the England Under-21 international, who fits the profile of what Ange Postecoglou is seeking from his wide players.

Although Aston Villa agreed to a buyback clause with Hull, receiving just £5m for Philogene’s transfer last summer, they can only exercise this option under specific conditions.

For the buyback clause, valued at £15m, to come into effect, Hull must secure promotion to the Premier League. Additionally, Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler confirmed to supporters last September that Aston Villa must match or exceed any offers made by other clubs.

Tottenham bolstered their wide options last summer with the permanent acquisitions of Manor Solomon and Brennan Johnson. Additionally, they secured Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

However, Solomon has been sidelined with a knee injury in recent months, casting doubt on Tottenham’s intentions regarding Werner’s permanent signing. While Werner has shown promise during his initial spell in the Premier League, it remains uncertain if Tottenham will pursue a long-term deal for him.

Furthermore, Tottenham may need to seek additional wide players if Son Heung-min and Bryan Gil depart the club. Son’s contract expires in 2025, and he is reportedly a target for Al-Ittihad, the reigning champions of the Saudi Pro League. Despite Son turning 32 in July, Tottenham is reportedly not considering summer offers for their captain, who has recorded 12 goals and six assists in 22 Premier League appearances in the 2023-24 season.

Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League standings, Tottenham is five points behind Philogene’s former team, Aston Villa, with a game in hand. They will resume their campaign following a two-week hiatus with a home fixture against London rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday.
