Getafe President Angel Torres cClaims That Mason Greenwood Desires To Remain For “Another Year

Getafe president Angel Torres has stated that on-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is keen on extending his stay with the Spanish outfit for “another year.”

After being informed of his lack of future at Manchester United last summer, the 22-year-old made a loan move to Getafe for the 2023-24 season. He has impressed for the club this season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.

Although Barcelona has shown significant interest in the Englishman, a recent report suggested that Greenwood would reject the opportunity to join Camp Nou if given another chance at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s new minority shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has hinted at a potential pathway for Greenwood to return to the first-team squad for the 2024-25 season.

While Torres acknowledges that ultimately, it’s up to Manchester United to determine Greenwood’s future, he believes that the forward is inclined to spend “another year” with Getafe.

“He has a clear conscience, he is very content, and he is enthusiastic about staying for another year,” Torres told COPE. “It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide.”

“There is new ownership. They have to make the decision. In Spain, he has interest, but they [Barcelona] have financial resources. Barcelona’s style of play would suit him well, but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll inform me.”

Greenwood has scored five goals and provided five assists in 21 La Liga appearances this season, while he also contributed two goals in three Copa del Rey matches before Getafe’s elimination.

The forward has tallied 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances for Manchester United. However, he has not featured for the 20-time English champions since January 2022.

Two years ago, following allegations from a woman, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. Subsequently, he faced additional arrests on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Greenwood was also confronted with charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm. However, the case against him was dropped last February.

Manchester United reportedly made the decision to reintegrate him into their squad last summer but reversed course due to public backlash.

Ratcliffe has stated that the club will thoroughly assess “the real facts” before reaching “a fair decision” this summer.

Several other Spanish clubs, including Real Sociedad and Valencia, are reportedly closely monitoring the situation, given his impressive performances in La Liga this season.
