Erik Ten Hag Maintains That He Will Retain The Authority To Veto Transfers At Manchester United
Manchester United’s head coach, Erik ten Hag, has emphasized his intention to maintain control over the transfer veto at the club within the new organizational framework.
Currently, Ten Hag holds veto power over all transfers, with his influence evident in the signings made since his arrival in 2022.
The football department at Old Trafford is undergoing restructuring following the arrival of new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Sir Dave Brailsford, director of sport at INEOS, is expected to play a significant role in this restructuring.
Dan Ashworth is also slated to join as the new sporting director. There had been speculation that Ten Hag would have reduced involvement in transfer dealings.
However, during his press conference on Friday afternoon, the Dutchman emphasized that he will retain the ability to reject signings. He emphasized the collaborative effort of all senior figures in the transfer market.
“When I arrived, I received the direction from the club. It’s customary for the club to set the style. Therefore, it’s necessary to reach an agreement on this,” Ten Hag informed reporters.
“We aim to play according to the club’s directive. From the outset, the club’s leadership has advocated for proactive, dynamic attacking football. Throughout my tenure here, we’ve consistently strived to adhere to this style.
“Yes, there’s certainly control. I’ve had discussions with them regarding this, and they won’t sign players who aren’t favored by the manager because it wouldn’t be effective.
“We will collaborate, offer suggestions, discuss potential signings, and ultimately select the right players together. It’s about cooperation and unity. That’s the approach they want to take.”
Ten Hag has expressed confidence in Antony’s ability to seize the forthcoming opportunities arising from Rasmus Hojlund’s muscular issue, which will create an opening in the attacking lineup.
“Yes, absolutely. He needs to demonstrate his capabilities, and I believe he will. He possesses immense potential. While he hasn’t showcased it recently, I’m aware of his talent, and it’s about validating that talent,” stated Ten Hag.
“He will likely receive opportunities now. However, this has always been the plan. There’s healthy competition, and Antony needs to prove himself on the training ground, as do others, as we have alternatives available.
“With Diallo returning from injury and performing well in training, along with Forson’s commendable efforts, we have several options to fill those positions. Therefore, it’s not predetermined that Marcus Rashford must play as a center forward.”
Manchester United has emerged victorious in their last five matches across all competitions and will aim for a sixth consecutive triumph when they host Fulham on Saturday afternoon.
