Last Summer, Liverpool Reportedly Rejected An Approach From Chelsea For Darwin Nunez
During last summer’s transfer window, Liverpool reportedly turned down an approach from Chelsea for Darwin Nunez. The 24-year-old forward joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022 and had an impressive debut season at Anfield, contributing 15 goals and four assists in 42 appearances.
Nunez has continued to be a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s team this season, with 13 goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. In the Premier League alone, he has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 24 outings, while also contributing four goals and four assists in the EFL Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League.
Although Nunez is under contract with Liverpool until June 2028, reports suggest that Chelsea made an approach last summer, as per The Times.
Allegedly, Chelsea’s pursuit of a striker prompted them to target Nunez, amid speculation that Liverpool might consider a sale for the right offer.
However, according to the report, Liverpool swiftly rebuffed Chelsea’s interest in the South American forward, expressing confidence that Nunez would prove to be a valuable asset in the years ahead.
Nunez garnered significant attention due to his performances at Benfica, with Manchester United also reportedly expressing interest in acquiring his services.
During his time at the Portuguese club, the forward amassed 48 goals and 16 assists in 85 appearances. His record for Liverpool now stands at 28 goals and 15 assists in 79 appearances.
Nunez’s availability for Liverpool’s EFL Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon remains uncertain. The striker, along with Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, is facing a race against time to be fit for the match.
“We are once again in a hectic schedule, playing every three days. It’s crucial for us to carefully assess the condition of the players. This applies to Mo, Dom, and Darwin,” stated Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders on Friday.
“With just two training sessions remaining, we’ll evaluate their fitness and make a decision at the last minute. As for the others, we have a bit more time to monitor their progress.”
Nunez has played a significant role for Liverpool in the EFL Cup this season, contributing with one goal and three assists in five appearances in the competition.
