Jeremie Frimpong Of Bayer Leverkusen Indicates His Interest In Joining LiverpooL
Jeremie Frimpong, the right-back for Bayer Leverkusen, has expressed his openness to the possibility of joining Liverpool in the future. He has played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s unexpected surge in the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, contributing seven goals and as many assists in 21 league appearances from his wing-back position.
Additionally, Frimpong has made one goal and three assists in four DFB-Pokal matches during Leverkusen’s journey to the semi-finals, further enhancing his reputation with strong performances.
Although he has been linked with a move to Manchester United to work under compatriot Erik ten Hag, Frimpong opted to extend his contract with Leverkusen until 2028 last October amid increasing interest in his talents.
However, it’s reported that Frimpong’s contract includes a release clause of around €40 million (£34.3 million), making him an affordable target for clubs looking to secure his services from the BayArena this summer.
Manchester United continue to monitor Jeremie Frimpong’s development in Germany, while Arsenal are also rumored to be considering activating the release clause of the Dutch international in the upcoming transfer window.
Despite Liverpool’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, Frimpong has expressed his admiration for the six-time Champions League winners, stating that it would be “great” to play for such a historic club. “Liverpool? Great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring,” said the former Celtic player in an interview with Ziggo Sport, as reported by Soccer News.
Thanks to Frimpong’s impressive performances, combined with the contributions of his teammates and Bayern Munich’s inconsistent form, Leverkusen currently sit eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table as they aim to thwart the reigning champions’ quest for a 12th consecutive title.
With managerial vacancies potentially arising at Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern, and even Real Madrid this summer, Leverkusen may struggle to retain Alonso, who only took charge in October 2022.
Frimpong also spoke of his enjoyment at playing in Alonso’s system, although he is refusing to get too carried away in the race for Bundesliga glory, in spite of the fact that Leverkusen are yet to suffer a single top-flight loss this term.
“We haven’t lost yet this season. But yes, football is changeable, we have to keep concentration. We all trust the coach and know we can do something big this season. We all want to win a trophy, and the coach helps with his playing style,” Frimpong added.
“”He has also worked under top trainers and can now combine those experiences himself. Everyone enjoys the playing style, but we shouldn’t think too easily. Yes, we are eight points ahead, but that is nothing. Certainly not with Bayern, who have already become champions 11 times in a row.”
Frimpong honed his craft in the Manchester City youth system, but he failed to make a single appearance for the Citizens, who sold him to Celtic for a nominal sum in 2019.
The 23-year-old commanded a modest £9.4m fee to leave Celtic for Leverkusen midway through the 2020-21 campaign and has now made 123 appearances for Die Werkself, scoring 20 goals and setting up 30 more.
