ROMOURS: Paris Saint-Germain Intends To Incorporate Xavi Simons Into The First Team For The Upcoming Season
Reportedly, Paris Saint-Germain intends to retain Xavi Simons in their first-team squad for the upcoming season. During the summer transfer window, PSG exercised their right to activate a buy-back clause for Simons, who had previously moved to PSV Eindhoven seeking regular first-team action.
Simons made a significant impact during his initial campaign in the Netherlands, contributing 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches across all competitions.
Despite the anticipation that Simons, considered one of the top prospects in world football, would remain with PSG upon his return, he was instead sent on another season-long loan to RB Leipzig to continue his development on the European stage.
Similar to his performance in his home country, the 20-year-old has excelled for Leipzig, contributing eight goals and nine assists in 31 appearances, further solidifying his reputation.
According to Fichajes, there was optimism within Leipzig that they could extend Simons’ stay beyond just one season. However, PSG is adamant that Simons will return to Parc des Princes for the 2024-25 season to establish himself as a key figure in the squad.
Currently, Simons has made 11 appearances for PSG, all before his move to PSV, accumulating 129 minutes in Ligue 1 across seven matches.
It is expected that, this time around, the Netherlands international will feature regularly under Luis Enrique, especially given the anticipated departure of Kylian Mbappe.
While PSG is actively seeking high-profile signings with the funds saved from Mbappe’s departure, Simons presents a viable option in the attacking third.
Additionally, PSG aims to incorporate more young talents into the first team, with Simons aligning well with this strategy and being under contract until 2027.
Despite his tenure at Barcelona’s academy for nine years, Simons does not qualify as a homegrown talent, as his first move to PSG occurred in 2019.
