Manchester City Handed Erling Haaland Contract Boost As Real Madrid Focus On Kylian Mbappe
Manchester City’s chances of persuading Erling Haaland to extend his contract at the club have reportedly received a boost following Kylian Mbappe’s decision to depart Paris Saint-Germain. Haaland’s future has been a topic of speculation recently, with Real Madrid closely monitoring his situation in Manchester.
The Norwegian international has once again showcased impressive form for the Citizens this season, netting 21 goals and providing six assists in 27 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he still has over three years remaining on his current deal with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Nevertheless, there have been recent indications that the 23-year-old may be unsettled in Manchester and open to discussing a potential move to Real Madrid during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Real Madrid is currently prioritizing a deal for Mbappe, as the forward has informed PSG of his intention to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of June.
According to The Mirror, Manchester City’s efforts to secure Haaland’s long-term commitment have received a boost due to Real Madrid’s focus on acquiring Mbappe.
The report suggests that the Premier League champions are eager to extend Haaland’s contract until June 2029 and renegotiate a release clause of £171 million, which would become active this summer.
Subsequently, Haaland’s buy-out clause is expected to decrease to £150 million for foreign clubs next year. It has been suggested that Real Madrid will pursue the signing of the forward at that time, as securing a deal for him in the same summer as Mbappe is deemed unrealistic.
The striker is reportedly not in a hurry to depart from Guardiola’s side and may potentially consider his options next summer. However, it remains uncertain whether Manchester City will be successful in renegotiating the buy-out clause.
Haaland has amassed 16 goals and five assists in 19 Premier League appearances this season as Manchester City chase the title. Additionally, he has contributed five goals and one assist in six Champions League appearances in the 2023-24 season.
Since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in July 2022, the forward has tallied 73 goals and 15 assists in 80 appearances for Manchester City, playing a pivotal role in their treble success last season.
Although Haaland reportedly harbors a desire to play for Real Madrid before his career concludes, a transfer to the Bernabeu this summer is now deemed nearly impossible in light of the Mbappe news.
