Brentford has confirmed the acquisition of forward Igor Thiago from Club Brugge. The Bees have struck a deal with the Belgian club to secure the Brazilian striker for a club-record fee reported to be around £30 million.

Thiago has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Premier League outfit, which also includes an option to extend for an additional 12 months.

The 22-year-old will continue playing for Club Brugge for the remainder of the season before joining his new Brentford teammates in preparation for the 2024-25 campaign.

“I’m delighted with the proactive approach the club has taken,” remarked Brentford head coach Thomas Frank on the club’s official website.

“I want to commend Matthew Benham, Phil Giles, and Lee Dykes for their diligent efforts. We’re ahead of the curve here. Securing a key player for a pivotal position is a significant achievement.

“Thiago is an incredibly promising striker who perfectly fits our team’s dynamics. He brings a strong work ethic and excels in pressing. Additionally, he adds a physical presence, is adept in the box, and can effectively link play.

“With his ongoing development in the Belgian league, there’s immense potential, and we eagerly anticipate seeing him don the red and white shirt.”

The striker kicked off his career with Brazilian club Cruzeiro before making a transfer to Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets in 2022.

Following a successful spell where he scored 21 goals in 55 appearances for Ludogorets, Thiago secured a move to Club Brugge last summer.

Since his arrival, Thiago has maintained a consistent scoring record, tallying 26 goals in 40 competitive matches this season.

The news of Thiago’s transfer to Brentford comes amid uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of England international Ivan Toney.

With less than 18 months remaining on his contract, Frank recently acknowledged the likelihood of Toney being sold in the summer.
